The Day-to-Day

Well, it’s been a week since my last blog. Some of you have been asking for more of the mundane details of our lives… Well here goes.

We realised when we moved (twice in eight weeks!!) that we have a lot of “stuff”. So while we are here in this current rental, I am going through every single item we possess and I am deciding whether we keep it, give to someone who we know would use it, give it to charity or try to sell it. It is a very slow process, because it happens when I have time. Time is not something I have much of.

While I was going through a container of items that are Kyah’s from when she was young I came across her very first pair of ballet shoes. They are very cute and I thought I’d compare them to the shoes she now wears. Slight difference in size and obviously the little ones are not pointe shoes. Kyah started dancing when she was two and a half years old!

     

There have been many, many pairs of shoes purchased and worn in between these two pairs of shoes. We anticipate there will be many, many more pairs of shoes purchased and worn before the end of her dancing career.

Kyah’s usual day is pretty busy. We have come up with a schedule that seems to be working quite well. She is up early most mornings; 6am. She does some rehab, prehab, and/or stability work in our gym. Then she gets ready for school, has breakfast and leaves by 7.45am.

She has a morning tea break through the school morning where she will eat something fairly substantial. Then at lunch time, she goes and gets ready for dance. She doesn’t like dancing with food in her stomach, so she does not eat again until she gets home.

She arrives home sometime after 5.30pm. So they are long days. I try to have dinner ready by 6pm, because I know she is hungry, when she gets home. After dinner, she goes up and does her homework and prepares for the next day.

Most weeks, Kyah is in our gym at least 3 times each week doing some sort of strength, endurance, stability or mobility work, on top of the other stuff she does in the mornings. She knows the benefit of injury prevention. Being strong and supple specific for her dance requirements is essential to help prevent any injuries, so she is pretty diligent with her exercises. Of course, she is human and gets tired at times, so we allow her a break to catch up on sleep and energy, then she goes again.

Sleep usually happens about 9 or 10pm. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later, depending on what we have on.

The food we organise for her includes things like savoury muffins, protein balls, fruit, juice, nuts, seeds.  So it helps to be organised. I try to get the muffins, and protein balls made on the weekends.

These are delicious savoury muffins. They have bacon, onion, garlic, carrot, zucchini, tasty cheese, parmesan cheese, and buttermilk in them. Really yummy warm, but Kyah is happy to eat them cold at school.

Here are some of the protein balls I made for her this week. They have cacao powder, crushed walnuts, dates, peanut butter, honey and coconut. Also very delicious.

Then dinner is usually something healthy. Last night was home made caesar salad with chicken. But here is a picture of the other night’s meal. It had pork mince balls, bacon, vegies, diced tomatoes, and coconut milk, without going into too much detail. We had that with rice and it was also very yummy.

Kyah recently had her bloods taken just to see how her health is. She is almost perfect in every area. So we must be doing something right.

As you all know, it takes effort to eat healthy. It is something I try to make sure I do each weekend. Ensure I have the necessary ingredients for the muffins and protein balls, then allocate a few hours to food prep for the week. This week I am going to make cranberry protein balls and some other easy-to-take-and-consume food for her. I will let you know how they turn out.

We watched Synergy again; it was lovely. The dancers put on a wonderful performance for us all.

We caught up with some people we had been communicating with. They are from England. Chloe was going to live with me on the Gold Coast this year, if I had stayed there and Kyah had come up to Brisbane without me. Anyway, Michelle (mum) and Chloe (daughter) were off to Hong Kong to participate in the Genée Ballet Comp. It was lovely to meet them. We sat and chatted as if we were old friends, it was really nice. We are hoping to catch up with them as soon as they get back from Hong Kong.

Kyah caught up with one of her school friends after ballet practice on Saturday. I think it is important for her to be able to relax and chill with friends, even if we have to sacrifice other things for her to do that. Friendship is so important, especially at her age.

Kyah danced most of Sunday with school. The performance is coming up, end of August, so they are rehearsing most weekends, when the kids are available.

This week is subject selection for years 11 and 12. Today there is a big information evening at the school. So we will find out if what she wants to study is do-able. If it’s not, then it’s find a plan B…..

We managed to get tickets to the Queensland Ballet performance of Swan Lake at Brisbane Riverstage in October. It is a free performance under the stars. Should be fantastic. If you want to go, you will need to get onto Queensland Ballet’s web site and try to book your tickets. I am sure they are being allocated very fast, so get in quick.

We now have three homestay girls with us. It is a little bit hectic at times, but the girls are all lovely and it is nice to get to know them and help them with their english, and allow them to have a place where they feel relaxed in Australia.
